His characters in this group are usually young and intelligent. Wounded mentally and physically by the war, they are thoroughly disillusioned and lost. Hemingway expressed so well their decadent, sensuous appearance and psychic chaos and disorientation. Hemingway's greatness lies in evoking such a psychological meaning, not just depicting the superficial facts.   Hemingway's style and techniques are in good harmony with his themes. A "hard-boiled" style obtained by understatement and spare dialogue is his hallmark. In such a flat, understated newspaper style, he controls emotion and conveys the exact bare reality. This reinforces psychic emptiness and injury his characters suffer from. It also matches well with his representative tough, terse, direct, and stoic characters and reinforces psychic emptiness and injury they hide.   In later works, Hemingway developed his early theme of the "lost generation" into the more universal one. Even when he rendered local and particular settings and events, his concern became to reach universal condition of human spirit in the twentieth-century.  This tendency culmainates in his treatment of psychic emptiness. His early characters destroved themselves confronted with this vast emptiness. Having lost hope and ability to participate in the meaningful activities in this world, they only waste their youth and energy. But in later works, Hemingway developed such passive concept of emptiness into deeper concept of "Nada." which means nothingness in Spanish. "Nada" includes not only spiritual hollowness but also existential nothingness which can be accepted as vast free space to establish individual meaning in. Hemingway's  later characters rarely give up trying to live meaningful lives in the world of "Nada." Rather they fight against it and struggle to create something human. His tragic vision of the ultimate harshness of life did not change, but he found some positive human virtues to overcome it :  stoic courage, endurance, integrity, and humility. 여기까지 입니다 ㅠㅠ
