1일 오전 6시 서울 송파구 거여동의 한 허름한 상가 건물 앞에 봉고차 20여대가 멈춰 섰다. 정장 차림의 20대 초반 남녀 300여명이 봉고차에서 내렸다. 인근 주택가에서도 비슷한 차림의 20대 200여명이 무리지어 걸어 나왔다. 30대 초반으로 보이는 남자 2~3명이 독일제 BMW 차량에서 내리더니 이들을 인솔해 상가 건물 안으로 들어갔다.

이들은 송파구 거여동과 마천동 일대의 다단계·방문판매 업체에 고용된 대학생들이다. 인근 주민들은 이들을 \'거마(거여·마천동을 합친 말) 대학생\'이라고 부른다. 대부분이 지방에서 올라온 대학생들이다. 유학비나 생활비를 마련하기 위해 다단계에 뛰어든 것이다. 이들은 66.6㎡(20평) 남짓 되는 방에서 10여명씩 합숙하며 건강식품이나 화장품 등을 판매한다.

다단계 업체에서 일하는 한 남학생은 "1월부터 등록비를 마련하려고 휴학하고 이 일을 시작했다"고 했다. 그는 "여기서 오전 5시에 일어나 6시까지 출근해서 오후 11시까지 영업활동을 한다"며 "담배 하나 피울 시간이 없을 정도로 빡빡한 스케줄에 따라 군대식으로 생활한다"고 말했다.

수백명의 대학생 영업사원들이 "돈 벌어 출세하자"는 구호를 외치면서 교육을 받는다. 저녁 무렵이 되면 송파구 성내천 일대의 공원과 공터 등에서 휴대전화와 수첩을 든 거마 대학생들이 본격적인 영업 활동에 들어간다. 인터넷을 통해 구한 불특정 다수의 연락처로 무작정 전화를 걸어 건강식품·화장품·가전제품 등을 사달라고 호소한다. 이들은 영업할 때뿐 아니라 물건을 사러 갈 때나 화장실에 갈 때도 철저히 단체 행동을 한다. 이동할 때는 반드시 팔짱을 낀다. 도망가는 것을 막기 위해서다.

강제적으로 합숙을 시키는 것은 엄연한 불법행위다. 거여동 다단계 업체 주변에 사는 김모(53)씨는 "캄캄한 밤에 여대생 1명이 헐레벌떡 달려와 \'제발 저 좀 숨겨주세요\'라고 사정을 한 적도 있다"고 말했다.

서울 송파경찰서는 송파구에만 600여곳에 달하는 다단계·방문판매 업체 중 상당수가 이 같은 불법행위를 저지르고 있을 것으로 보고 최근 내사에 착수했다. 경찰은 미등록이나 유사수신 등 다른 불법행위를 저지르는 업체들도 적발해 처벌할 방침이다.
