One day, while I was studying in the East Asian Library at Columbia, a stranger came up to me and, after introducing himself, said, “I’ve seen you eating at the Chinese restaurant. Would you like to have dinner there with me tonight?” I hesitated because at the time I had so little money that the slightest unforeseen expense played havoc with my budget, but the man seemed interesting and, before I knew it, I found my self consenting. That evening, after dinner, he took me to his apartment and showed me the objects of Japanese art he had collected while studying and teaching English in Japan and Taiwan. He expressed regret that he had never learned more than rudimentary Japanese, and said that he intended to spend the summer at his house in the mountains studying with a Japanese tutor. He was afraid, however, that if there was no one else studying with him he would neglect his studies to wander in the beautiful surroundings, and he was therefore looking for two or three people to join him in studying Japanese. He asked me if I was interested and, after much hesitation, I eventually accepted the invitation, not because I wanted to study Japanese, but because I was eager to escape from New York during the hot summer months.
